| summary |
The Web has quite often been used to disseminate teaching material, however, very few "publications" have actually gone beyond using it as an inexpensive distribution channel of classically formatted and presented materials such as textbooks, overheads, reports and papers. Based on slides taken after major earthquakes such as Northridge, Mexico City and Kobe, a slide database of some 500 most descriptive slides has been created in digital form. The core of the system are slides showing the structural damage. Contrary to some of the existing libraries, all slides are commented in detail, classified and labeled with keywords. Additionally typical damage and background information is elaborated on. The system offers state-of-the art navigation, browse and search options using a combination of database technology and friendly Web hypertext interface. It is designed to ease the access to the knowledge which has been learned by these earthquakes. Students and engineers are free to choose their path through the system, explore the structural details they are currently designing and learn in the process. The system is available both on the Web and on CD-ROM. |
