summary Civil engineers are used to describing the buildings with different static, dynamic, building physics, and geometric models. The models are analyzed by computer programs, which are able to read the description of a model in the digital form. Each particular model includes only some of the properties of the building, but some of these properties appear in almost all models. The term "product model" denotes the information on a building, needed in the lifetime of a building by an owner, an architect, an engineer, a contractor, a facility manager, a user, and others, who deal with with the building. The information model should be the source of the information, from which the information needed by different programs might be drawn out. Information model is different for different buildings, but some similarities exist. The term “conceptual building product model” indicates the enlistment of concepts and data structures, which makes possible the description of each building. In the paper, the development of the area in the recent years is shown. The attempts to standardise the conceptual model of the building were made. There are already many programs, which use the standardised models. This means that the need for manual transfer of data among the programs have become less important, that more and more variants could be analyzed, and that the engineering software will soon work as usual administrative programs. There are new possibilities for the cooperation among programs via the Internet as well.

povzetek Gradbeni inženirji opisujejo zgradbe z različnimi vrstami statičnih, dinamičnih, gradbeno-fizikalnih in geometrijskih modelov.
